For those who believe ski touring is only for extreme athletes, the Nockberge Trail in Carinthia, Austria, presents a different perspective. As reported by PlanetSKI, this trail offers a luxurious approach to ski touring, blending backcountry adventure with comfort.
The Nockberge Trail connects several smaller ski resorts in Carinthia, Austria's southeasternmost province. These include resorts like Katchberg, Turracher Höhe, and Bad Kleinkirchheim. Ski touring provides a way to travel between them across ungroomed terrain.
Ski touring equipment uses specialized bindings that allow the heel to be fixed for downhill skiing or released for cross-country style movement. Attachable "skins" on the base of the skis provide traction for uphill travel, enabling skiers to ascend slopes without slipping.
The "luxury" aspect, according to PlanetSKI, is facilitated by organizations like Trail Angels. They handle the logistics of the trip:
- Booking accommodations in 3 or 4-star hotels along the route.
- Arranging luggage transfers.
- Providing single-use lift passes to minimize uphill climbs.
While the Nockberge Trail offers a more comfortable experience, it still requires a degree of physical fitness. According to PlanetSKI's experience, a typical day might involve 1,000 vertical meters of skinning over six hours. Participants should also be confident skiing in varied snow conditions off-piste.
PlanetSKI's tour began in Katchberg with a guide, Lisi. After an avalanche kit check (shovel, probe, transceiver), they utilized a single lift, the Aineckbahn, to reach 2,200m. From there, they ventured beyond the resort boundaries, enjoying fresh snow in the high alpine terrain before beginning the main climb.
Ski touring requires pacing. Too fast, and you expend too much energy. A steady pace allows you to appreciate the scenery. The goal of this tour was to travel from resort to resort over several days. Trail Angels offers tours ranging from 3 to 7 days, with options for hotels or mountain huts, and provides qualified local mountain guides.

A guide's role involves assessing terrain, avalanche risk, weather conditions, and the client's fitness level. Flexibility is also key, as weather conditions can change plans. The Nockberge Trail offers alternative routes, and even taxi services as a last resort.
The Nockberge Trail is ideal for those seeking a less strenuous ski touring experience. The combination of backcountry skiing and comfortable amenities makes it an attractive option for a wider range of skiers. Information can be found at www.nockberge-trail.com.
