According to reports from PlanetSKI, the 2026 winter season is ending on a high note. Despite a wave of resort closures in mid-April, mountain conditions remain favorable for those looking to squeeze in a few final turns. Recent fresh snowfall at higher altitudes has bolstered the base, providing better-than-average end-of-season conditions.
Resorts Closing Late April
Several prominent destinations have recently ceased operations, including Les 3 Vallées (excluding Val Thorens), Alpe d'Huez, Avoriaz, Flaine, and Serre Chevalier in France. In Austria, Gurgl, St. Anton, and Lech have also ended their winter seasons, while Switzerland saw closures in Saas-Fee, Arosa-Lenzerheide, and Andermatt-Sedrun. Italy’s Champoluc has also shut down.
However, skiers still have options. Les Arcs, La Plagne, and Verbier are scheduled to remain open until Sunday, April 26, 2026. For those looking further north, Norway’s Trysil and Narvik are also operating until April 26.

May Skiing and Glacier Access
The first weekend in May is typically viewed as the traditional end to the European ski season. Resorts such as Tignes, Argentière, Cervinia, Engelberg, Ischgl, and Pitztal are expected to close on Sunday, May 3. PlanetSKI notes that Tignes will host the second edition of the Tignes Unlimited Festival from April 25 to May 3, featuring electronic music stages at altitudes up to 2,704 meters.
For those seeking even later turns, glacier resorts are the primary choice. Stubai (May 17), Kaunertal (May 25), and Kitzsteinhorn (May 25) remain open, with Mölltal's closing date currently unconfirmed. Hintertux and Zermatt continue to offer year-round skiing, weather permitting. Additionally, Les2Alpes will transition into its 'Spring Season' on May 4, continuing through July 5.

Important Travel Advice
PlanetSKI emphasizes that spring operations are highly volatile. Lift status and terrain availability can change rapidly based on snow conditions and temperatures. Travelers are strongly advised to check directly with the specific resort for the most current information before booking any last-minute travel.
