As the spring season hits its stride in the Sierra Nevada, Palisades Tahoe has confirmed the return of its most anticipated springtime tradition. According to a report by SnowBrains, the 34th Annual Cushing Crossing is set to take place on Saturday, May 2, 2026. Often referred to as the “Granddaddy” of all pond skims, the event serves as a quintessential celebration of the late-season ski culture.
Unlike many other resorts that construct artificial pools for their end-of-season festivities, Palisades Tahoe utilizes a natural pond. This provides a unique, rugged, and notably colder environment for participants. The event is scheduled to kick off at 1:00 p.m., where competitors will attempt to navigate the water on skis or snowboards. Judges evaluate participants based on a combination of costume creativity, overall style, and the entertainment value of their inevitable wipeouts.
The competitive field will be scrutinized by a panel of local celebrity judges and industry emcees. Winners stand to earn a collection of prizes provided by a group of high-profile sponsors, including Smith, The North Face, Darn Tough, Smartwool, Chomps, and Honey Stinger.
For those looking to participate, the resort emphasizes that spots are limited. Registration will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 8:00 a.m. at the Wildflower Baking Company on the day of the event. Participation requires a $20 cash entry fee. Spectators are welcome to attend the event for free and are encouraged to participate in the festive atmosphere by wearing spring-themed costumes while watching the action from the pond's edge.
