Legal action has been initiated against two parents following a serious chairlift accident at Blue Knob All Seasons Resort in Pennsylvania. According to reporting by SnowBrains, Micah and Maya Porter of State College were arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Tonya Osman on charges of endangering the welfare of a child.

The incident occurred on March 1, when the couple's five-year-old son fell approximately 20 feet from a chairlift. Court documents indicate the child was riding the lift alone at the time of the fall. The boy reportedly lost his balance while attempting to adjust his goggles, leading to the plunge onto the snow below. Following the fall, the child was transported via air to UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh for medical treatment.

Investigations conducted by state police highlighted a significant delay in the parents' response, noting that resort staff required roughly 15 minutes to locate the couple after the accident. Evidence presented in an affidavit of probable cause, as cited by WTAJ, suggests that a lift operator had previously engaged Micah Porter regarding the child’s solo boarding. Despite the operator's concerns, Micah reportedly insisted that the five-year-old was an experienced skier capable of independent lift use.

Maya Porter later informed authorities that she believed her son was a highly proficient skier who frequently navigated challenging terrain ahead of her. She indicated that when she reached the bottom of the run and could not locate him, she assumed he had simply returned to the lift for another lap. Micah Porter noted to investigators that his family's home mountain, Tussey Mountain, enforces a 51-inch height requirement for solo riding—a policy not present at Blue Knob.

While the family has since spoken publicly about the importance of safety equipment, crediting an industrial-grade helmet with preventing more severe injuries, the legal consequences remain significant. The Bedford County District Attorney’s Office is currently overseeing the preliminary hearing phase. First Assistant District Attorney Megan E. Will stated that the office remains dedicated to the safety of children within their jurisdiction. As of the time of the report, no formal statements have been issued by the legal counsel representing the Porter family.
