According to a recent report by SnowBrains, the Sierra Nevada is bracing for a brief period of unsettled weather. An incoming system is expected to deliver light snow accumulations across the range from Sunday, May 3, through Tuesday, May 5, 2026.

While the storm is expected to provide a late-season dusting for higher elevations, the quality of the snow will be dense and wet. Early in the event, snow levels are expected to hover around 8,500 feet, with Snow-to-Liquid Ratios (SLRs) ranging from 3-7. As the system progresses into Monday and Tuesday, temperatures are expected to drop slightly, lowering snow levels to between 7,000 and 8,000 feet and improving the snow density to an SLR of 7-11.

Forecasters advise that the primary concerns for skiers and mountain visitors during this period include lightning, small hail, and gusty outflow winds. Despite the active weather, the accumulations remain modest. Mt. Rose is currently projected to receive the highest totals, estimated between 5-7 inches. Other resorts, such as Kirkwood and Mammoth Mountain, are expected to see between 3-4 inches, while Palisades Tahoe and Sugar Bowl are anticipated to see 2-3 inches.

By Wednesday, May 6, the system is forecast to move out of the region. High pressure is expected to build over the West, leading to a warming trend and dry conditions for the remainder of the week. Long-range models suggest that this shift will lead to above-normal temperatures and below-normal precipitation for northern California, effectively ending the chance for meaningful late-season powder accumulation.
