While the majority of the world's ski resorts transition to mountain biking and hiking as the Northern Hemisphere warms, a select few destinations are just beginning their operational season. According to reporting by SnowBrains, these summer-only ski areas are often defined by extreme geography; some are so remote or snow-heavy that they remain completely inaccessible during the winter months.
Gassan, Japan
Located in the Yamagata Prefecture, Gassan is a unique case where the sheer volume of winter snow prevents the resort from opening until spring. Sitting at 5,249 feet, it offers four beginner runs and two advanced runs. The resort opened on April 10, 2026, and is expected to operate through July.

Norwegian Glacier Skiing
Norway is home to several summer-exclusive destinations. The Stryn Summer Ski Centre, situated on the Tystig Glacier, is scheduled for a May 22 opening. For those seeking the highest terrain in Scandinavia, the Galdhøpiggen Summer Ski Center (known as 'Juvass') sits on a glacier at 8,098 feet and will operate from May 8 to November 8, 2026. Meanwhile, the historic Fonna resort, which faced recent bankruptcy, is undergoing a revitalization project to operate as a focused terrain park using a conveyor lift.

Passo Stelvio, Italy
As the largest summer ski area in the European Alps, Passo Stelvio offers a historic experience that has been popular since the 1930s. Spanning over 12.4 miles of groomed slopes and reaching an altitude of 11,319 feet, it serves as a training ground for professional racing teams. The resort is confirmed to open on May 30, 2026.

Beartooth Basin, USA
In the United States, the Beartooth Mountains in Montana provide an off-the-grid, rugged experience for skiers looking to extend their season well into the summer months.
