According to reporting by PlanetSKI, the 2025/26 winter season is officially approaching its conclusion. Sunday, May 3rd, marks the final day of operations for several major Alpine destinations, including Val Thorens, Tignes, Val d’Isere, Argentière, Ischgl, Cervinia, and Pitztal.

Readers on the ground in the Tignes and Val d’Isere area report that the late-season conditions remain favorable for those who enjoy the classic spring freeze-thaw cycle. While pistes are firm in the early hours, the warmer temperatures cause rapid softening, particularly on south-facing slopes. PlanetSKI reader David Morgan noted that while off-piste opportunities still exist, they require precise timing to navigate the changing snow quality.

Resort infrastructure is also reflecting the end-of-season atmosphere. Occupancy levels in the Tignes and Val d’Isere area have dwindled to approximately 34.5% and 29% respectively, with some sectors—such as Les Brévières—already seeing closures of bars and services.

However, the end of the winter season does not mean the end of skiing for the year. Les2Alpes is transitioning immediately into its spring/summer glacier season, opening on Monday, May 4th, and continuing through July 5th. Other high-altitude locations are also extending their reach into the coming weeks:

  • Stubai: Open until May 17th
  • Kaunertal: Open until May 25th
  • Kitzsteinhorn: Open until May 25th
  • Mölltal: Date to be confirmed

For those looking for long-term options, Hintertux in Austria and Zermatt in Switzerland remain open for summer skiing, provided that weather and snow conditions allow. As always, travelers are advised to check directly with individual resorts before booking, as late-season operations are highly sensitive to changing weather patterns and snow depth.
