According to a report by PlanetSKI, the 2025/2026 winter season has proven to be one of the most challenging on record for Vail Resorts. The company, which manages 37 ski areas across North America, cited record-low snowfall and persistent warm temperatures as the primary drivers for a significant downturn in performance.
Vail Resorts CEO Rob Katz described the conditions in the western United States as historically unprecedented. The Colorado Climate Center confirmed that the region experienced its worst snowpack year in recorded history. This lack of snow necessitated early closures for many properties; for instance, the Vail resort was forced to cease operations on April 8, nearly two weeks ahead of its planned April 19 closing date.
The financial impact of these climate-driven challenges is reflected in the company's season-to-date performance metrics. Overall skier visits dropped by 14.9% compared to the previous year. The Rockies—home to iconic destinations such as Breckenridge, Park City, and Vail—suffered the most, reporting a 25% decline in visitation.
Revenue streams were similarly affected. Lift revenue saw a 5.6% decline, while auxiliary services experienced double-digit drops: ski school revenue fell by 12.0%, and dining revenue decreased by 11.7%. Retail and rental operations also saw a reduction of 6.6%.
Despite the difficult season, some resorts have attempted to extend the experience for guests. Breckenridge, which concluded its main season on April 19, planned to reopen a portion of Peak 8 on April 25 for a community event. This initiative included limited lift access, terrain park features, and social activities for Epic Pass holders.
Looking toward the future, the company is monitoring the sales of the 2026/2027 Epic Pass. CEO Rob Katz noted that while there has been a moderate decline in units sold, it remains early in the sales cycle. Vail Resorts expects to provide a more detailed update regarding their fiscal performance and pass trends during their third-quarter results announcement in June 2026.
